Josef Mengele was born on March 16, 1911 into a family with two brothers. He grew up being known as very intelligent and popular, and later went on to study philosophy at Munich and medicine at Frankfurt University. In 1937 he joined the Nazi party, and a year later he joined the SS. A few years later, Mengele was wounded and decided to get sent to a concentration camp. He was sent to Auschwitz and became one of the most known symbols of the Holocaust itself. Josef Mengele had an unusual interest with twins, and used his medical knowledge to summon and experiment with as many twins as possible from Auschwitz. When he was overseeing all of the new incomers, he would have all of the SS guards send the twins off with him so he could use them for his medical/genetic interest. He also would take other "unique" people, such as dwarfs or cripples. He then put all of these people in a separate barracks from everyone else titled "Zoo". Mengele was comforting to the twins at first, and put them in a good setting so the twins would be in good shape to be experimented on. He called them his children, and ordered the guards to look after them and keep them in good shape. The twins were also given some other perks, such as being able to keep their own clothes and hair. The twins were treated well just to be completely destroyed by Mengele's gruesome experiments. These experiments were claimed as research and looking into twin genetics, but it has been very clear, ever since discovered, that Mengele was simply exercising his power and his experiments didn't give any good findings or information. When Auschwitz was shut down, Mengele escaped as a regular German Infantry and ended up at the Gross-Rosen work camp, which he left before it was shut down. He was then captured as a POW, and later released. Mengele decided to leave Germany, and ended up going to Argentina, where there was sympathy for the Nazis. His medical records from experimenting disappeared when his identity did, and nothing Mengele did became beneficial in any way.
